A little about Heidi

About Me

I have been doing nose work with my canine partners since 2011 and competing since 2012. I started nose work when my dog, Gromit was injured in agility. I missed doing things with him and nose work was a perfect option for us. I am now working with my 3rd canine partner. I was hooked when I realized it was a sport that involved understanding what the dog was communicating to me and I could deepen my relationship with my canine best buddy. I have been fortunate to have been involved in the first trials held in Minnesota. I have been a competitor, a volunteer coordinator, worked all volunteer roles at National Association of Scent Work (NACSW)trials, and have completed training to be a score room lead. I have also competed in Canine Performance Partners Scent Work Trials. I participated in an official NACSW nose work camp held in the Wisconsin Dells. I was able to learn from the founders of the sport at this camp as well as many trainers selected by NACSW to instruct at the camp. I have participated in multiple special nose work camps held in northern Minnesota and the EcoUrban challenges. These brought in trainers from across the country to offer insight and ideas on the sport. I have also partnered with Twin Cities Obedience Club to host sniff-n-go events. I have held multiple fund raisers offering sniff-n-go trial like settings. I have also competed in Agility, Obedience, Rally, and Trick contests. I train tracking and Treiball with my current dog. I understand there are multiple sports pulling our dog folks in different directions. What I believe I will bring to Saint Paul Dog Training Center is someone who has observed hundreds searches and teams. I have experienced multiple training methods. I enjoy the journey and being open to what different teams bring to the table with nose work. In my experience, no dog searches exactly the same as another dog and yet they solve the same puzzle. Watching teams solve problems energizes me and I think that enthusiasm can be contagious. I love the idea of getting teams started on this journey and being amazed at what a dog’s nose knows! As a final note I am continuing my training to include certification as an instructor through NACSW.
